This idea originated as a disappointment–Auburn didn't have a culinary club. I acknowledged and dismissed my dismay, and for about a year did not think of culinary clubs again.
About midway through the past semester I began to realize that if I want to open my own restaurant, I sure as anything better be familiar with them. And what better time to start familiarizing myself than now? I would visit a new restaurant every other week and attempt to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of each one (realistically, there are not enough good restaurants in the Auburn area to keep this up for more than, say, a couple months, so that idea wouldn't have lasted long anyway). Not wanting to go alone, I thought I'd invite a friend or two along each visit. I then realized it would be even more fun if there were a group of us who visited restaurants in such a manner.
While this idea was developing, I too was developing, though in my culinary interests and pursuits. I became ever more interested in the culinary arts and began looking for ways to educate myself while still attending college. Though I am quite good at teaching myself, there really isn't anything like learning from a pro. Surely, thought I, there must be others who would like to know more about the culinary arts. I cannot be the only one interested in learning culinary skills...
Wait! I am a member of the Auburn Real Estate Society! What does that have to do with cooking? Well, not much. But, the society was formed to educate its members on real estate investment, brokerage, etc.. They bring in professionals once a month to give a lecture on their area of expertise. Wouldn't it be great if there was a club that brought in professionals from the culinary world?
Thus the idea for Auburn Food & Culinary was born. It would educate its members on the culinary arts by bringing in professionals to share their knowledge and expertise.
A good starting point, but still just a swirling in the vapors in my head.
to be continued...
